Crown vs. Filling: How Your Dentist Decides What You Need

When you have a damaged or decayed tooth, your dentist will recommend either a filling or a crown. Both restore the tooth — but they're used in very different situations. At Saryan Dental in Glendale, CA, we explain every recommendation so you understand exactly why a specific treatment is the right choice for your tooth.

What Is a Filling?

A filling repairs a small to moderate cavity by removing the decayed portion and filling the space with composite resin (tooth-colored) or amalgam material. Fillings are ideal when the cavity affects less than about 50% of the tooth's surface and the remaining tooth structure is healthy and strong.

What Is a Crown?

A crown (cap) covers the entire visible portion of the tooth above the gumline. It's custom-made to match your natural tooth shape and color. Crowns restore both function and appearance for teeth that are too damaged for a filling to reliably hold.

When Your Dentist Will Recommend a Crown

A crown is typically recommended when: decay affects more than half the tooth, the tooth is cracked or fractured, a large old filling has broken down and weakened the tooth, the tooth has had a root canal (making it brittle), or the tooth is severely worn from grinding.

When a Filling Is Sufficient

Fillings are appropriate for smaller cavities caught early, minor chips or cracks on the surface, and when the tooth structure surrounding the damaged area is solid. This is one reason regular checkups matter — catching decay early keeps treatment simple and affordable.

What About Inlays and Onlays?

There's a middle ground between fillings and full crowns: inlays and onlays. These are custom-crafted restorations for damage that's too large for a filling but doesn't require a full crown. Ask Dr. Saryan if this option is appropriate for your tooth.
